Guided bear viewing

Fly into wild coastal Alaska to see brown bears.

A scenic floatplane flight, a small group and an experienced local guide bring you into some of the finest brown bear country in the world.

The experience

We go where the viewing is best.

Every tour begins in Kodiak City. From there, your route may cover approximately 75 nautical miles each way to the Katmai Coast or cross Kodiak Island to Frazer Lake.

Food, tides, weather and recent bear activity determine the day’s destination. On a group tour, Kingfisher chooses the location. Exclusive-tour guests may request a destination we serve, but the final decision still rests with the pilot and guide. We do not fly to Brooks Falls.

Experience matters here

Guiding from Kodiak since the late 1990s.

Glen and Kyle have transported and guided thousands of guests safely while creating memorable Kodiak and Katmai experiences. That history informs every route, landing, tide decision and weather call.

If we delay, move or cancel a tour, there is a reason. Remote Alaska requires conservative decisions, and we ask guests to respect the pilot’s final call.

Looking for Brooks Falls?

We do not fly to Brooks Falls.

Kingfisher Aviation does not offer flights to Brooks Falls or Brooks Camp—on group tours, exclusive tours or private charters.

Brooks FallsOne famous destination at Brooks Camp. Guests watch bears from established viewing platforms, and bear activity can delay travel through camp.
With KingfisherSmall guided groups depart Kodiak City. We choose among the destinations we serve on Kodiak Island and the Katmai Coast based on weather, tides, salmon and bear activity.

Brooks Falls and the Katmai Coast are different places within Katmai National Park and Preserve. You traveled all the way to Kodiak—let us show you the best bear viewing we can find that day, away from the lines at Brooks Falls. If the falls are your goal, please book with another flight service that flies there.

Kodiak bear or coastal brown bear?

It depends where we land.

Bears on the Kodiak Archipelago—including Frazer Lake—are Kodiak brown bears. Bears across Shelikof Strait on the Katmai Coast are mainland coastal brown bears.

Both are brown bears adapted to rich coastal food sources. The distinction is geographic: Kodiak bears are the island subspecies found only within the Kodiak Archipelago.

Plan for your travel dates

When will you be in Alaska?

All Kingfisher bear tours originate in Kodiak City. Choose your travel month to see the likely route, conditions and bear activity.

July · Frazer Lake

Sockeye salmon gather below the fish pass.

Frazer Lake’s returning sockeye concentrate bears near the falls and fish pass. Built in 1962, the fish pass lets sockeye climb the falls and reach Frazer Lake. Bears have adapted their fishing strategies around the fish pass. The flight crosses Kodiak Island before landing on the lake, followed by a guided walk to the viewing area.

Likely destination
Frazer Lake on Kodiak Island
Timing
Typically departs around 2:00 PM for the best bear activity and lasts about 4–5 hours. An additional 8:00 AM departure may be offered during peak season for last-minute travelers or to work around the weather.
Bear activity
Bears gather along the river and below the fish pass as sockeye move upstream.
Walking & footwear
Approximately ¾ mile on a maintained wilderness trail. Knee-high waterproof boots are provided.

These are typical seasonal patterns, not guarantees. Wildlife, salmon runs, tides and flying weather determine the best destination each day.

Protect the day

Please keep your tour day flexible.

Please avoid asking us to move the planned time or date unless it is genuinely necessary. Tides, weather, aircraft logistics and current bear activity determine the best departure.

Dedicate the full day to the tour—it may leave earlier or later than originally planned. We also strongly recommend spending multiple days in Kodiak so weather leaves room to reschedule.

Common questions

Know before you book.

Please review these answers before contacting us; they cover the questions that most often affect a successful trip.

Where do bear viewing tours depart?

All Kingfisher bear viewing tours originate in Kodiak City from our office at 1829 Mill Bay Road. Your confirmation will provide the meeting instructions, but plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled tour time.

Can I choose the bear viewing location?

Kingfisher chooses the destination for group tours using current wildlife reports, salmon movement, tides and weather. Exclusive-tour guests may request a location, but the pilot makes the final operational decision.

Can I change my tour time?

Please keep the scheduled day open rather than building other fixed activities around the listed time. We may need to depart earlier or later to work with tides, weather or changing bear activity. Per our policy, we ask that you provide at least 30 days’ notice for any date changes.

How many days should I spend in Kodiak?

Plan multiple days whenever possible. Kodiak weather can delay flying, and extra time gives us a better opportunity to reschedule.

What footwear should I bring?

It changes by month and destination. Regular shoes may be enough in May. Knee-high waterproof boots are provided for Frazer Lake; hip boots are required for Kukak Bay and provided for Geographic Harbor. Follow the month guide and your pilot’s instructions.

Why would Kingfisher delay or cancel?

Weather, landing conditions, tides, aircraft considerations and wildlife activity can all affect a remote tour. A delay or cancellation is made for a reason, based on decades of local operating experience.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We do our best to reschedule your tour based on your availability and ours. Sometimes we can add an additional tour section. If we are unable to make another time work, you will receive a refund less the credit-card processing fee.

Can you drop me off at or pick me up from a lodge for my tour?

Typically, no. Our bear viewing tours originate in Kodiak City. We may occasionally be able to make special arrangements for an exclusive tour.

Will you fly to Brooks Falls?

No. Kingfisher Aviation does not offer flights to Brooks Falls or Brooks Camp. If Brooks Falls is your goal, please arrange transportation with another flight service that flies there.

Can we get more time on the ground?

No. Because weather, tides, wildlife activity and other operational factors can change during the day, the duration of our tours is set.
