Plan your visit

Kodiak is worth more than a quick stop.

Learn how to reach the island, where to stay and how to leave enough room in your plans for weather—and a little exploring.

Welcome to Kodiak

A remarkable island in the Gulf of Alaska.

Kodiak Island is the second-largest island in the United States. Kodiak City is the community most visitors use as their base and the starting point for all Kingfisher tours.

The island is large, the weather can change quickly, and many of its most memorable places lie beyond the road system. Give Kodiak enough time to be part of your trip—not simply the connection between two reservations.

Getting here

Plan the trip to the island first.

Kodiak is reached primarily by air or aboard the Alaska Marine Highway. Build some flexibility around whichever route you choose.

Fly from Anchorage

Most visitors fly from Anchorage to Kodiak. The nonstop flight is typically about one hour, although weather can affect schedules.

02

By sea

Take the ferry from Homer

The Alaska Marine Highway connects Homer and Kodiak. The crossing is about nine to ten hours, but sailings are limited and schedules change by season. Check the current timetable before building the rest of your trip.

By cruise ship

Check your time in port

Cruise ships visit Kodiak occasionally, but port calls do not always leave enough time for a weather-dependent floatplane tour. Confirm your arrival and all-aboard times, then contact us before making plans.

Getting around

Renting a car is the easiest option.

A rental vehicle gives you the flexibility to reach your lodging, meet Kingfisher at 1829 Mill Bay Road and explore Kodiak’s road system on open days. Availability can be limited during the summer, so reserving early is worthwhile. Some visitors also rent a U-Haul pickup when regular rental cars are unavailable.

Hotel transportation

Ask about a courtesy shuttle.

Before arranging a separate ride, ask your hotel whether it offers airport courtesy transportation and whether it must be reserved in advance. Service and hours can change.

Where to stay

Keep Kodiak City within easy reach.

Staying in or near town makes it easier to adjust a flight departure if weather or operating conditions change. Book lodging independently and consider nights on both sides of any remote trip.

Vacation rentals

Looking for a house, apartment or B&B?

Kodiak also has a range of vacation homes, bed and breakfasts and short-term rentals. Use Discover Kodiak’s lodging directory to compare current options and locations.

Leave time for the island.

Use flexible days for a coastal walk, museum or cultural stop, fishing, a marine outing or a drive along the road system. Kodiak also rewards visitors who leave space simply to watch the weather and wildlife change.

A simple way to plan

Save the full tour day.

Bear viewing times and destinations depend on tides, wildlife and weather. Leave the entire day open for your flight and, when possible, spend multiple days in Kodiak in case a flight needs to move.
