The first portion of the flight will take you above the small village of Ouzinkie, which has a population of approximately 170 residents. This community is only a 5-minute flight from Kodiak, but is only accessible by boat or airplane. Next, you will fly over Marmot Bay and Whale Island areas where it is common to find whales surfacing if the seas are calm. Your pilot will follow the rugged coastline, which may provide you the opportunity to see commercial salmon boats fishing, sea otters, whales and sea lions from the air. After about 50 minutes of flying over beautifully rugged mountains and bays, your pilot will land the airplane at Zachar Bay Lodge to give you a chance to stretch your legs, grab a drink and explore a historic cannery.
The second portion of the flight will take you from Zachar Bay back to Kodiak via “the backbone” of mountains that divide Kodiak into east and west halves. This area is covered in rugged snow capped peaks and the mountain goats thrive in this terrain. The flight may take you as far south as Karluk or Frazer Lake, and then over Kodiak’s only glacier, the Koniag Glacier. The flight back to Kodiak takes approximately an hour and will end with a splashdown in Lily Lake at Kingfisher’s office.
