Kodiak Island is the Emerald Isle in the Gulf of Alaska! We are off the beaten path of tourists coming through Alaska, but the select few that do visit Kodiak tend to have an enjoyable and memorable visit. When planning a trip to Kodiak, it is very important to incorporate an element of flexibility in your travel/activity schedule to plan for the possibility of weather delays. Planning for the Unplanned: Bear Viewing Trips: With this in mind, we usually recommend to plan on spending at least 2 full days and 2 nights on Kodiak to ensure good weather, or the possibility to reschedule a bear viewing tour. Kodiak has many activities, such as museum tours, charter fishing, nature hiking, rental cars and other activities that may be pursued on days that it may not be flyable. Hunting/Fishing/Cabin Trips: If your plans are a remote camping trip, anticipate on budgeting at least a night in Kodiak or Anchorage on either end of the field travel days. When packing for the field, take food, fuel and supplies to be out for at least 4 days longer than anticipated (May-September) or 7 days (September November). We will make every effort to be as timely as possible to scheduled trips, but SAFETY is our number one concern.
Getting to Kodiak: Kodiak is provided airline service from Anchorage by Alaska Airlines and ERA Aviation, which fly a combined seven flights per day. Alaska Airlines has two flights with a Boeing 737 Jet while ERA has five flights utilizing a Dash 8 aircraft. The flights take from 40 minutes to an hour. The Alaska Marine Highway system also operates an ocean going Ferry to Kodiak from Homer & Seward. The ferry ride is between 10-12 hours in length. |
